Telmo Frómista

Pedro González [ San ]

Nació en la localidad palentina de , hacia el año 1190 . Su nombre era Pedro González , pero es conocido como San Telmo . Era sobrino del obispo de Palencia , y fue enviado a estudiar a la recién creada universidad de Palencia , en donde destacó por su gran nteligencia .
Muy joven aún , fue nombrado canónigo de la Catedral de Palencia , y luego Deán . Pero un hecho cambiaría el rumbo de su vida : la caída de su caballo en el barro de una de las plazas de la ciudad , el primer día que paseaba como Deán , ricamente engalanado .
Decide cambiar su vida e ingresa en la recién fundada Orden de los Predicadores ( Dominicos ) . Estudió teología y se convirtió en predicador incansable . Fue consejero del rey Fernando III el Santo , y se dedicó en su misión apostólica a ayudar a los necesitados , y , de un modo especial en Galicia y Portugal , a la atención de los marineros .
La gran devoción que le declaran los hombres de la mar , con el nombre de San Telmo , se debe a que una tormenta se calmó con la invocación de su nombre . Con fama de santo , murió en Tui en el año 1246 .
