Para - athletics is practised people with a disability . events are mostly the same as those available to able - bodied people , with two major exceptions in wheelchair racing and club throwing , which are specific to the - athletics division .

There three main categories : deaf athletes , athletes with a physical and athletes with an intellectual . Members of the first group normally compete among themselves , while the second and third groups assessed and given a classification and therefore they are grouped together with those who have similar ability levels . There an International Paralympic Committee which is in charge of creating the different groups .

Paralympic athletics entered the Paralympic games in 1960 . The Games organised in parallel with the Games .
