The 3 Branches of Government

In terms of the separation of powers, there are three parts to the constitution of the United States: legislative, executive, and judicial. To maintain a good government and protect the rights of citizens, each branch shares its powers and responsibilities with other branches.
3

The Legislative Branch

The legislative branch writes proposed laws, confirms or rejects presidential nominations for federal agencies, federal judges, and chief justices, and has the power to declare war.

Among other powers, the legislative branch makes all laws, declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies.

The branch consists of (Senate and House of Representatives) and specialized agencies and offices that support Congress.

Representatives serve 2-year terms. There are a total of 435 members.

Each of the 50 states is equally represented by two senators who serve staggered terms of six years, for a total of 100 senators.

4

The Executive Branch

The executive branch carries out and enforces laws. It includes the president, vice president, the Cabinet, executive departments, independent agencies, and other boards, commissions, and committees.Much of the work in the executive branch is done by federal agencies, departments, committees, and other groups. The President has the unique powers of being able enter into international treaties, veto acts of congress, and appoint Supreme Court Justices. The President is charged with enforcing the laws of the United States and ensuring the defense of the nation.President term = 4 years
5

The Judicial Branch

The Judicial Branch interprets the meaning of laws, applies laws to individual cases, and decides if laws violate the Constition. The judicial branch consists of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal Judicial Center. The judicial branch determines the validity of federal laws and resolves other disputes about federal laws. Instead, courts rely on the executive branch of our government to enforce court orders. The court will decide what happened and what to do.

Judges and Justices serve no fixed term — they serve until their death, retirement, or conviction by the Senate.
