Een kip legt zoveel , tot er genoeg zijn om te . Ze houdt de eieren op ongeveer
Celsius . Als een ei lang genoeg bebroed is , komt het uit . Het kuikentje maakt de
van binnenuit met de stuk . Na het uitkomen moeten de donsveertjes eerst
opdrogen . De hen houdt de kuikens onder haar warm .

De meeste kuikentjes worden in een broedmachine uitgebroed , maar deze hen broedt haar
eieren zelf uit . Voordat ze ging broeden legde ze elke dag een ei totdat haar compleet
was . Pas als er genoeg eieren zijn gaat ze er op zitten om ze te houden .
Als een ei niet goed ligt , rolt de hen het met haar op zijn plaats . De warmte van haar
lichaam zorgt ervoor , dat de eieren steeds zo'n 40° Celcius zijn . Dit ei is al een paar weken
bebroed . Er komt een in , dat steeds groter wordt . Het maakt met de
eitand op de snavel de eischaal van binnenuit stuk .
Eerst zijn de nog helemaal nat en aan elkaar geplakt . Als het kuiken al
helemaal uit het ei is , zijn de veertjes nog steeds nat . Maar na een uurtje is het kuiken een
balletje , dat op eigen pootjes kan staan .
De moeder gaat door met broeden , tot alle eieren zijn uitgekomen . Daarna houdt ze haar
jongen onder haar vleugels warm . Ze maakt zachte om de kuikens duidelijk te
maken dat ze niet weg moeten lopen .
