Part of the voltage wave sent from the drive to the motor is reflected or bounced back, because the impedance of the cable and the impedance of the motor is the same.

The longer the length of the cable between the drive and the motor, the greater the portion of the reflected wave and therefore the higher the peak voltage at the motor terminals.
