How to Say No
You have an invitation to spend a relaxing Saturday at the beach . But then a friend asks you to drive her to an appointment . Your boss asks you to come in and finish a project . Your mother asks you to help clean up her yard . You politely say yes , even though you really want to say no .

Many people can't say no . They don't want to make their friends feel bad or feel they can't say no to family . At work , some people don't say no because they don't want to miss an opportunity , like the chance to learn something
new and interesting . But when you say yes to someone else , you say no to yourself . People who always say yes become tired or sad . They may even have a meltdown and get so upset they can't do anything ! So how do you say no ? Here are some ideas :

- When someone asks for a favor , say , " Sorry , but I can't this time . " A polite answer like this is nicer than a rude one , like " I don't want to do that ! " It won't make the person angry , and it says you might help next time .

- Tell the person you have another commitment - that you said you would do something else . This shows that you take your commitments seriously .
- Say , " l don't want to say I'll do something if I don't have time do my best . " This shows that you want to help , but only when you can do an outstanding job .
