Always be careful about giving out your personal information . Never enter your name , address , or telephone number on a website until you are sure you understand its privacy policy . Make sure they will not give your information to anyone else . Also be on guard when you are asked to fill out a form for an online contest or promotion . The people collecting this information might use it to try to sell things to you in the future . Most importantly , never give out your passwords to anyone online , even if the website is secure . Your password is the key to all your personal information for that website , so you should keep it private .

Don't ever reply to spam , those unwanted emails about things like weight loss , investment opportunities , or work - at - home schemes . In fact , you should probably delete these kinds of emails before you open them . If you do reply to a spam email , you risk getting more spam once the " spammers " find out you are a real person .

Another kind of online threat is more embarrassing than it is dangerous . Be sure to avoid posting personal information or photos on social networking websites .
