Expand your mind like a rubber band

The world of work is changing rapidly and with it , the skills needed to succeed . We focus on some tips to help you develop creative thinking .

There are certain jobs ? like accounting and law ? where logical , analytical thinking is a great asset . Similarly , where one is trying to solve a problem that you have encountered before , then this approach is invaluable . Tried and tested solutions work well in these situations . However , when you encounter a new problem or when the circumstances change , as they seem to do now with ever increasing frequency , then such an approach can be unhelpful . This is when creative or thinking takes the biscuit . In these situations , it's not about following rules , procedures , or ; but rather finding the , that leap into the unknown , the idea that .

In the new book Elastic : Flexible thinking in a constantly changing world , Leonard Mlodinow , renders some guidelines on how to the mind to develop more creative thinking . He contends that such skills are within the compass of most people . This 'elastic thinking' as he named it , focuses on stretching the boundaries of the mind , rejecting the constraints that usually govern decision making . The key of elastic thinking are involved with connecting the unconnected and not being afraid of failure . One example cited in the book is that of the creators of Pokeman Go ! Traditionally , gamers were envisaged as people , but by ignoring this preconception , the game developers changed the way that people thought and behaved . So , what can you do to develop this skill ? How can you whip your mind into shape ? Let's examine some of Mlodinow's suggestions :

" If you really want to open the door to elastic thinking , it is paramount , " he says , " to carve out some time in the day for daydreaming . " Staring into space may not endear you to your boss even if you do explain that you are expanding your mind , so it may be better to practice this outside of working hours , at least until you have demonstrated what an asset you have become ! Less controversial perhaps is the advice to consciously to leave your comfort zone . Listen to ideas and concepts that you actively disagree with , talk to strangers that are outside your usual social circle , see art and listen to music outside your normal tastes . It is important to let go of comfortable ideas and to rest easy with contradiction and challenge .

Of course , we are all familiar with the humble elastic band . One of the first and still the largest companies in the business is the family owned , Alliance Rubber Company in the U . S . A . Throughout the history of the company , their employees' innovative thinking has enabled it to diversify what it produces to meet the needs of industries as different as healthcare , fishing , and the military ? all based on the humble elastic band in many .

And why is this change of thinking important to you ? The answer is a simple one : companies are demanding it . Recruitment managers are reporting that there is an ever bigger demand for flexible thinkers . Those that can demonstrate a track history of creativity attract great interest from the fastest growing companies . So , don't just , create the time for a little unfocused thinking in your day . You might be surprised at what ideas pop into your head .
