Do you have a good nose ?

Do you have a good sense of smell ? Have you ever wondered how top perfumes are created ? Here's an opportunity to find out more .

Does the smell from your kitchen waste bin trouble you in the hot weather ? Can you tell if the milk is off simply by it , or maybe you can detect the elements of a good wine by putting the glass close to your nose ? Our noses contain hundreds of small , and some of those receptors are stronger than others and can be altered during our lifetime . Did you know , for example , that your sense of smell weakens as you get older or that many pregnant women experience a heightened sense of smell ?

In one or two professions a sense of smell is something that truly sets you apart from the crowd . In the small world of perfumery , for example , this will mean the difference between success and failure . Most industry experts seem to agree that women generally have a better nose than men , and so we asked Ruth Mastenbroek , past president of the British Society of Perfumers how she got involved . " My training , with Givauden , started with a smelling test , " she said . " Then I took structured training at the head office in Holland . Then , ten years ago I set up my own company , 'Fragosmic Ltd . ' and so we have created products for many companies . "

We asked Ruth how she went about creating a new . Is it just a question of mixing and matching the nice ? " When you build a perfume , " says Mastenbroek , " you create a structure around three notes . You get a top , middle , and a base note , just like you do in a music composition . Then it is all about the combination you use , and in what ratio . Having the base note too strong will overpower the other fragrances . Meanwhile , the top note acts to grab the attention until it and allows the other fragrances to continue the magic . "

Entering this industry is far from easy , another perfumer describes how she had to memorize more than 2 , 000 ingredients . However , it's not all bad news ! The good news is that if you are interested in entering the world of perfume , either as an interested amateur , or as an perfumer , then it is possible to train your nose . Here is one suggestion on how to start doing that from a guide written by Victoria of 'Bois de Jasmin' .

Start by engaging with the aromatic scents all around you ? in the kitchen , in the garden , in the park , on the market stalls . Learn to recognize the smells and start to your nose to the subtle differences . Spices like pepper , saffron , and cumin are particularly useful as they are probably an ingredient in one or two of your favorite scents . When you're out in the country , look out for the smell of the damp earth , pine forest , or newly cut grass . All these woody , green , and earthy scents are present in perfume .
