El coneixement que els europeus tenien del món durant l'edat era molt reduït . Bàsicament es
limitava a Europa , la conca del , el nord d'Àfrica , el proper i algunes notícies que es tenien
sobre el continent asiàtic .
Es tenien coneixements molt imprecisos de llocs llunyans com i l'imperi mongol de Khuiblai
gràcies a alguns viatgers com el venecià Marco , al segle XIII . Al centre d'Àfrica , pensaven que hi havia el
regne cristià del Preste Joan , que creien que era descendent dels Reis Mags .
Alguns mariners intrèpids s'havien aventurat a l'oceà per explorar noves rutes , però els
coneixements tècnics d'aquella època feien molt difícil la navegació per aquelles mars . Tot just havien
arribat fins les Illes Canàries i els qui es feren mar enllà , no havien tornat .
