Structres

Slideshow

Structures are physical frameworks or objects that are designed to support loads, provide stability, and serve specific functions. They can be found in both natural and human-made environments, ranging from the intricate web of a spider to massive skyscrapers and bridges. Effective structures combine strength, stability, and functionality to ensure they can handle forces such as weight, pressure, or wind without collapsing. Their design often incorporates geometric shapes, like triangles and arches, to maximize efficiency and durability.

Structures

A structure is something that is built or put together to support a load or fulfill a specific purpose. Structures can be found everywhere in our daily lives, from natural formations like spiderwebs and bird nests to human-made designs like bridges, buildings, and chairs.

2

Properties of structures

Structures must have three key properties to function effectively:

  1. Strength – The ability to withstand forces or loads without breaking.
  2. Stability – The ability to remain balanced and not topple over.
  3. Functionality – Designed to serve its purpose efficiently, whether it's holding weight, providing shelter, or enabling movement.

3

Types of Structres

Structures can be classified into:

  • Natural Structures: Found in nature, such as trees, animal skeletons, or mountains.
  • Man-Made Structures: Built by humans, like towers, dams, or vehicles.

Structures often use shapes like triangles, arches, or beams to ensure strength and stability. These principles are essential in engineering and design, helping us create everything from safe homes to sturdy bridges.

Questions and reflections

  1. What type of bridge design did you choose, and why?
  2. How did you ensure your bridge was strong and stable?
  3. Which part of your bridge was the weakest, and how would you improve it?
  4. Compare your bridge's weight limit to your prediction. Was it accurate?
