Let's look at a few of the considerations of living off the grid :

? Land : Prices vary wildly from country to country , and from region to region . But let's take the U . S . as an example . An isolated piece of land could cost $100 , 000 or more . A simple cabin house will cost a minimum of $50 , 000 , but Alaska would be a cheaper location than , say , California .

? Electricity : Living off the grid usually involves disconnecting from an electrical company's power and making your own using wind , solar , or hydroelectricity . The amount of time it takes to pay off a solar varies greatly from four to twenty years . Wind energy can be generated for around three cents per hour in optimum conditions , plus there are no greenhouse emissions , so choosing a renewable energy source is extremely environmentally friendly .

? Water : You may need to dig a and install a sewage system of some kind . There are more than 17 million homes in the United States that get their water from private wells . However , it's easy for harmful contaminants to get into your well if it's not installed properly . The cost of a private well varies from $3 , 000 to $15 , 000 depending on how deep you have to go . Installing a filter will make the water safer . It is not a bad idea to build a water tank to collect rain water in case you live in an area where there are water shortages . The water tank can be built above ground or underground .

If you are careful about the products you buy , you can a lot of garbage as well . Grow your own vegetables and get some hens for eggs or goats for milk . Shopping at the farmer's market will help you avoid packaged foods and this will greatly reduce the amount of paper and plastic waste you produce .
