Up until 1860 , was destroyed through the use of Austrias Metternich like Carlsbad Decrees . Frederick William IV of Prussia tried to unite Germany in 1848 but he turned it down , in 1850 there was at Olmütz , and because of this unification seemed like it was no where near and wouldn ? t happen . However in 1861 , there was a new , Wilhelm I who helped pave the way to German unification in 1871 alongside Bismarck . Prussia was winning small short scale wars , which competition to Unification , they fought in 3 wars , The Danes in 1864 , The Austro - Prussian war which was also known as the seven weeks war in 1866 , which then led to the Franco - Prussian war in 1870 through until 1871 . Bismarck can be referred to as the architect of German unification . The role Bismarck played in German unification makes him the most significant factor as to how Germany were able to finally unite . However , other factors should be considered which include , Prussian military strength , Prussian economic strength , Austrian Strength , and finally the role of other countries .

The main factor Germany was able to unite in 1871 is because of the role of Bismarck and how he is known as the architect of German unification in the Prussian Parliament . When King William I was trying to push through his military reforms it made a lot of difficulties as the Parliament were reluctant to finance these reforms which led to a . To reduce this , William I decided to appoint Bismarck as Chief minister . Historians believe it was ? s that ultimately led to Germany ? s unification in 1871 . His idea was to make Prussia the main dominant power so that they could maintain over the other German states . Bismarck used a method called ? realpolitik ? this is where he dealt with problems in rather then in an . He also influenced unification because of his foreign policy . He was able to improve prestige which we can see when he gained the support in the Prussian parliament . This contributed to German unification because he was able to win over many nationalists which gained Bismarck and the King in parliament . This then gave Prussia the ability to be stable and to grow which helped the process of German unification . However , this was not a reason as to why Germany United in 1871 because , some historians argue that Bismarck was just to situations and that he himself did not propose all the traits people gave him such as determined , strong , risk taker , he would only which could be seen as success , even though he didn ? t plan things out . Historian D . G Williamson agrees by saying in his book " Bismarck and Germany 1802 - 1890 " which was released in 2010 " Bismarck did not fashion German unity alone . He exploited powerful forces that already existed ; the industrial revolution in Germany , the growth of liberalism and German nationalism " In evaluation , Bismarck was the most important factor in the Unification of Germany because of his foreign policies that made him have 3 wars with Denmark , Austria and France , the war with France was important because it gained a all across Germany , because were scared of France they also joined with Prussia and their which led to the German empire being on the 18th January 1871 at the palace of Versailles .

Another factor that can be considered as a reason as to why Germany was able to unite is Prussian military strength . Prussia saw that military reforms were the natural next step , Their reforms helped them win battles against 3 different countries in 7 years . King William I had serious concerns about the Prussian military and started reform immediately . In 1860 the bill that would the Prussian army was introduced . This included , service changing from 2 years to 3 years , the of the army , and re men with better for example could fire 5 times faster then the old fashioned muskets previously used . As a result of this they were able to achieve a of and soldiers . This helped Prussia win over Denmark , Austria and France , Historian Edgar Feuchtwanger said that " A war with France breaking out under the right circumstances might well be the catalyst for bringing the South German states to the side of Prussia " in his book " Bismarck , Routledge 2002 " This shows that the military reforms were successful in winning all of these wars but more importantly after the win over France they were able to bring together all of Germany . However , this factor can be limited because a lot of the Prussian army was built on , and not actually well thought out tactics . Moltke divided his troops and mostly placed them in the to try and his attacks . In evaluation , Prussian military strength is a big factor as to why Germany was able to unite because the levels of leadership Roon and Von Moltke used to decide to their ended up giving the a surprise which they also used similar tactics when they had a war with France when Von Moltke and Von Roon decided to attack where there was 5 Prussian rail lines in comparison to France ? s 2 which helped them lead the way to unification .

more neighbouring states money Austria power industrialising lines more Austria railway southern states

Another factor to be considered as a reason as to why Germany were able to unite is Prussian Economic strength . Prussia was fast compared to in the iron and textile industry as well as coal production . Prussia had also increased the amount of they had between 1850 through until 1870 . By 1870 , Prussia was the most industrialised state because of their leadership in the Zollverein . This led to the state gaining , which then made them able to start the process of Unification . In the book " Access to History : The Unification of Germany and the challenge of Nationalism 1789 - 1919 ( 5th Edition ) , Hodder education " Farmer A says " The economic and financial strength of Prussia provided it with the military resources it needed to challenge first Austria and then France . " However , this factor can be limited because even though Prussia was the most industrial state , still a lot of German states looked to instead , which was seen when the sided with over Prussia . Therefore , in evaluation , Prussian economic strength is more important then Prussian military strength because , since Prussia was increasingly industrialising everyday they were levels above Austria , and had a lot as it was shifting away from Austria which made it way easier to then beat them , which then helped people realise unification was the right move going forward .

battle states Prussia War 21 no military their difficulties states German Confederation choice Sadowa southern North of lead isolated industrialisation Crimean around Russia financial strong diplomatically

Another factor to be considered as a reason as to why Germany was able to unite is the decline of Austria . Austria had very little compared to Prussia which made them seem backwards . Austria were also suffering from a lot of as they were having to pay a lot of money to station their troops empire . This meant that they could not keep up with neighbouring states . They were also experiencing issues by being , which put them in a bad situation , because they were not getting good support from other countries like who she failed to support during the . This was an important factor in order for Germany to unify because , as Austria were not getting support from other countries it made it easier for Prussia to go on to declare war on them and then defeated them in 7 weeks . Because of this defeat Austria had but to follow with Prussia and to finally unite Germany , Austria ? s strength was an obstacle to unification because , Finlay McKichan says that " Austria could not afford to encourage nationalism by permitting the unification of Germany " in his book " Germany : 1815 - 1839 : the rise of nationalism , Oliver and Boyd " 1992 , Therefore because they were beaten by Prussia they had no other choice . However , this can be limited because even though Austria was declining , they still had the support from the and still had a despite all the issues like in the against Prussia they were able to show effective uses of their artillery . Overall , the Decline of Austria was an important reason why Germany finally United because Austria was no longer able to make all the decisions in German politics , they were no longer the powerful state they once were which meant that was able to the German states into a United Germany because of the New which included German .

dominance distrust Crimean War declaring Advancements neutral Prussian Russia beliefs dominant France disliked wars trusting religious state

The last factor to be considered as a reason as to why Germany was able to unite is the role of other countries , such as Russia and Britain . Britain agreed a lot on what Prussia was doing and had decided that they are of as they have the same and also a similar towards , was also agreeing with Prussia because they Austria for not helping them in the and supported the Prussian if it made difficulties for Austria . This helped Germany unite because both Britain and Russia did not stop Prussia on France , Austria and Denmark and this led them to being the most . However this can be limited because , even though these countries did not stop Prussia they also didn ? t do anything to support their wars , they actually stayed so this limits the role of other countries .

Germany Bund successful architect leadership politics German nationalists dictator politics countries being exploiting effectively disbanded of determination benefit

In conclusion , there was a lot of different reasons as to how Germany was able to unite but the role of Bismarck was the most important reason why Germany United in 1871 . On the one hand , the role of Bismarck was the most important because historians argue he is the of unification for his to make the most of every situation he had to deal with , whilst also gaining support from the which helped him be at the centre . On the other hand , the Decline of Austria can also be seen as an important factor as she could no longer be the in as the and she couldn ? t take control over Prussia as Prussia was now the most dominant state by far . Which then led to Prussia able to declare war on Austria and defeat them . Overall , the role of Bismarck was the most important factor in achieving German unification in 1871 because of his and his quick thinking to use his skills and being in the wars he declared whilst also other for ? s .
