Lily sat alone in her room , listening to the - of the old clock on the wall . The house was silent except for the faint - of raindrops against the window . She pulled her blanket tighter around her shoulders , shivering .

Suddenly , a loud bang echoed through the house . Lily jumped , her heart pounding . " It ? s just the wind , " she to herself . But then , she heard another sound ? a soft creak from the hallway . Someone , or something , was there .

She reached for her phone , but before she could grab it , it on the table , making her gasp . It was a message from her brother : " Be home soon . Don ? t be scared ! "

Lily let out a relieved sigh . Just then , the family cat and rubbed against her leg , as if sensing her fear . " You scared me , Whiskers , " she murmured , stroking his fur .

Finally , she heard the front door open . Footsteps on the wooden floor . " Lily ? " a familiar voice called .

Her brother was home . She laughed at herself for being so scared . " You have no idea what I just went through , " she said , shaking her head .

Whiskers let out a soft , as if agreeing with her .
