The Mona Lisa , one of the world's most famous paintings , was stolen from the Louvre museum in Paris in 1911 . At one point in the investigation , the famous artist Pablo Picasso was accused stealing the artwork . This was because he had previously shown an interest buying stolen artwork . But Picasso was proven innocent when museum employee Vincenzo Peruggia later tried to sell the Mona Lisa to an Italian art gallery . He had taken advantage the poor security in the museum by entering during regular opening hours , hiding in a closet , then sneaking out at night with the painting . He wanted to take the picture because he was concerned one of Italy's greatest pieces of art being displayed in an art gallery in France . Though it wasn't part of his plan , Peruggia made a contribution security at the Louvre , which was greatly improved after he committed his crime .
