La se originó por la aplicación del articulo que limitaba la intervención de las instituciones religiosas en la política del estado . Por esta razón el 31 de julio de 1926 la jerarquía católica decidió suspender los servicios religiosos y cerrar las iglesias . En enero de 1927 , en Jalisco , Colima , Nayarit y Zacatecas grupos de católicos se levantaron contra el gobierno al grito de ¡ Viva Rey ! .

Después de tres años de sangrientas batallas en el centro y occidente del país , la Guerra Cristera ( - 1928 ) terminó con un pacto en el que el gobierno se comprometió a ser mas tolerante y los cristeros a restablecer el culto y respetar las leyes .

Calles era el hombre fuerte de la nación ; ninguna decisión se tomaba sin su consentimiento , por lo que llegó a conocérsele como Máximo de la Revolución . Así mismo el periodo de 1928 - en el que dirigió la política sin ser presidente se le conoce como .
