Fertilisation in flowering plants is a vital process that begins with pollination . Pollination refers to the transfer of pollen grains from the ( the male part of a flower ) to the ( the female part ) . This can occur within the same flower or plant , which is known as - pollination , or between different plants of the same species , known as - pollination .

Once a pollen grain lands on a receptive stigma , it absorbs moisture and begins to germinate . It grows a pollen tube that travels down the and into the ovary . Within this tube are two male nuclei which are transported toward the ovule .

The pollen tube enters the ovule through a small opening called the micropyle . Once inside , double fertilisation takes place ? a unique characteristic of flowering plants .
