The table provides information about the consumption and production of natural gas in millions of tonnes for nine countries in the year 2001 .

Overall , it is clear that the USA had levels of both natural gas consumption and production , while countries like the Former Soviet Union and New Zealand showed the figures . In most countries , consumption and production were , though some , like Japan and South Korea , relied entirely on imports .

In detail , the USA consumed 588 . 9 million tonnes of natural gas , any other country , and produced 500 million tonnes . The United Kingdom followed , consuming 86 . 1 million tonnes and producing at 97 . 3 million tonnes . China and the UAE had levels of production and consumption , with both countries producing just than they consumed .

Japan and South Korea , , did not produce any natural gas , consuming 68 . 6 and 18 . 9 million tonnes respectively . Australia and New Zealand produced gas than they used , with Australia producing 28 million tonnes compared to its 19 . 1 million tonnes of consumption , and New Zealand showing a small surplus as well . The Former Soviet Union had levels of both consumption and production , with just 7 . 1 and 0 . 4 million tonnes respectively .
