but and but and but in or so and and Or But because with

It was foggy that morning at Hawthorne Hill Primary , the old brick building looked even more mysterious than usual . The students arrived bundled in coats scarves , one classroom remained empty .

Class 5B .

Their teacher , Mr . Wren , was nowhere to be seen .

" Maybe he missed the bus , " whispered Isla , a curious girl bright eyes and a notebook full of made - up mysteries .

" he ? s ill , " added Theo , " like last week when he had that awful cough . "

But the headmistress hadn ? t mentioned anything assembly , and his coat was still hanging by the door .

" He wouldn ? t leave without telling anyone , " Isla said , frowning . " Especially not on the day of the science fair . "

They peeked inside the classroom . The lights were off , there was a faint hum , like an old TV left running . On his desk was a mug ? still warm ? and a single sheet of paper .

Theo picked it up . It was blank on one side , the other had a message written in crooked , rushed handwriting :

" Check the greenhouse . Don ? t trust anyone . Lock the door behind you . "

Isla and Theo exchanged a look . The greenhouse hadn ? t been used in years the roof was cracked and ivy had taken over the entrance .

" Should we go ? " Theo asked .

" We could tell someone . . . we check ourselves , " Isla replied , gripping her notebook .

They slipped away during breaktime , past the playing field toward the edge of the school grounds where the greenhouse stood ? crooked silent beneath the grey sky .

The door creaked open .

Inside , it was warmer than they expected and oddly neat . The broken pots were gone , the shelves were dusted , but the back corner was hidden behind a curtain made from a black bin bag .

They hesitated .

" We should go back , " Theo whispered .

" We ? ve come this far , we have to look , " Isla replied .

She reached for the curtain .

before she could pull it back , the greenhouse door slammed shut behind them .

They turned ?

Footsteps .

Then silence .
