The RMS Titanic was considered the most ( 1 ) ship of its time . Built in Belfast , Northern Ireland , it was designed to be unsinkable and luxurious . On April 10 , ( 2 ) , the Titanic departed from Southampton , England , on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean . There were approximately 2 , 200 passengers and crew members on board .
The journey proceeded smoothly for several days . On the night of April 14 , despite receiving warnings about icebergs in the area , the ship maintained its high ( 3 ) . At 11 : 40 p . m . , the lookout spotted an iceberg directly in the ship's path and immediately alerted the ( 4 ) . Although the crew attempted to avoid the collision , the ship's starboard side scraped against the iceberg , creating a series of holes below the ( 5 ) . Water began flooding into the lower compartments . The crew began loading passengers into ( 6 ) , but there weren't enough for everyone . Women and children were given ( 7 ) , while many men went down with the vessel .
By 2 : 20 a . m . on April 15 , the Titanic had completely ( 8 ) beneath the freezing waters of the North Atlantic . More than 1 , 500 people lost their ( 9 ) in this tragic maritime disaster .
The sinking of the Titanic led to significant improvements in maritime ( 10 ) regulations , including requirements for sufficient lifeboats and 24 - hour radio communications on passenger ships .
