Microbes exhibit a vast range of that reflect their adaptability to diverse environments . Their nutritional schemes are broadly categorized based on their sources of carbon and energy . Microbes can be classified as heterotrophs , which obtain carbon from organic sources , or , which use inorganic CO2 as their carbon source . Additionally , microbes derive their energy either from light , as seen in that harness sunlight for photosynthesis , or from chemical compounds , a trait of chemotrophs . These classifications often combine into specific terms like photoautotrophs or chemoheterotrophs to describe the primary nutritional modes of microorganisms .  
 
Autotrophs , which acquire carbon from CO2 , exhibit varied . Photoautotrophs , such as algae and certain bacteria , use sunlight to convert light energy into chemical energy , producing organic molecules essential for the majority of food webs . In contrast , chemoautotrophs , including chemolithoautotrophs , derive energy from inorganic compounds and do not require sunlight or organic nutrients . Chemolithoautotrophs obtain energy by oxidizing inorganic substances like hydrogen sulfide or iron , demonstrating a unique adaptation to environments devoid of organic matter . On the other hand , most heterotrophic microorganisms are chemoheterotrophs , relying on organic compounds for both carbon and energy . These microbes are categorized further into , which decompose dead organic material , and parasites , which derive nutrients from living hosts , often at the expense of the host's health .
