Act II Scene 1 of " Pygmalion " opens in Professor Higgins's in , the morning after and Colonel had encountered a Cockney flower - girl , Doolittle , in Covent . Higgins is enthusiastically discussing with Pickering , specifically his ability to discern various vowel sounds , even more so than Pickering . Mrs . Pearce , the housekeeper , then enters to announce that a young woman , Eliza Doolittle , is waiting to see Higgins .

Mrs . Pearce initially wanted to send Eliza , recognizing her as a " common girl , " but thought Higgins might want her for his phonetics . Higgins , intrigued by her " dreadful " , agrees to see her , viewing her as a fascinating specimen for his work . He reveals to Pickering that Eliza is the same girl he had " jotted down " notes about the previous night . Higgins quickly becomes dismissive of Eliza once she's present , finding her " no use " and trying to send her , but his initial about her unusual accent ultimately drives the scene .
