Las teorías ácido-base explican el comportamiento de sustancias en reacciones químicas. La teoría de Arrhenius define ácidos como sustancias que liberan iones H⁺ y bases como aquellas que liberan iones OH⁻ en disolución acuosa, siendo útil pero limitada a medios acuosos. La teoría de Brønsted-Lowry amplía el concepto al definir ácidos como donadores de protones y bases como aceptores, aplicable en más contextos, incluso sin agua. Finalmente, la teoría de Lewis es la más general, considerando ácido a cualquier sustancia que acepte un par de electrones y base a la que lo done, lo que permite explicar una mayor variedad de reacciones, incluso en química orgánica e inorgánica.
