About this activity

Students will work in small groups to reconstruct the major events in the life of Jane Eyre. Each group will receive a shuffled set of cards, with each card describing a key moment in Jane’s journey. As a group, they will read and discuss the cards, then arrange them in chronological order based on the progression of Jane’s experiences—from her childhood at Gateshead to her reunion with Mr. Rochester. After organizing the plot, students will reflect on how each stage in Jane’s life reveals the challenges she faced and how these experiences shaped her character. Each group will then share one or two key insights about Jane’s growth and how her story reflects real-life struggles and social issues.

She later discovers they are her cousins and that she has inherited a fortune, giving her financial independence. Jane returns to Thornfield and finds it destroyed by fire. Mr. Rochester, now blind and injured from the fire, lives alone and humbled. Jane is mistreated and unloved at Gateshead Hall, where her aunt and cousins see her as a burden. She grows up feeling unwanted and isolated. Jane takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she teaches a young girl named Adèle. She begins to feel valued and forms a deep connection with Mr. Rochester, the master of the house. Devastated by betrayal, Jane chooses to leave Thornfield, even though it means facing poverty and loneliness. She values her integrity and self-respect above all. Jane falls in love with Mr. Rochester, but their relationship is tested when she discovers he is already married to Bertha Mason, a woman with mental illness hidden in the attic. After years of hardship and education, Jane becomes a teacher at Lowood, gaining her independence and a sense of purpose for the first time. She is sent to Lowood Institution, a strict charity school where the conditions are harsh. Despite the cruelty, Jane finds comfort in her friendship with Helen Burns and begins to develop resilience. St. John Rivers proposes to Jane, urging her to join him as a missionary wife. Though grateful for his kindness, Jane declines, knowing it would mean denying her true self. Jane and Mr. Rochester reunite and marry, now as equals. Jane finally finds love, peace, and belonging on her own terms.
