Long ago , in the East , a young goatherd named Kaldi began to strange behavior in his goats . After they would on red berries from a certain bush , they became unusually energetic . Curious , Kaldi decided to for berries himself . This led to his run - - with a local monk who , intrigued by the discovery , took the berries to his monastery .

The monks , with simple equipment , decided to the berries over fire , creating a strong aroma . They then the roasted seeds in water to brew coffee ? a drink unlike any other . Though the coffee grounds were bitter , the monks found the beverage to be to long nights of ritual and prayer in their mosques .

As time passed , sailors brought coffee along routes , spreading it from Arabia to Europe . The drink became widespread , valued as a snack that could sustain , maintain , and support one's energy through the day . It was even said to be more beneficial than wine !

In marketplaces filled with herbs , pollen , and spices , merchants would grind coffee beans using handmade mills . It soon became popular with both like camels ( who ignored it ) and people , who adored it . Some believed it was a gift from the gods , and would even the sun while drinking it , like ancient worshippers performing sacred rites .

Not everyone found the new drink attractive ? some called it unattractive and bitter . But the , the brave , and the daring continued to enjoy it , including one famous bald man who drank three cups before battle , claiming it made him fearless .

Today , as we in our morning cup of coffee , whether with baked potatoes or roasted meat , we are sharing in a tradition that began with a curious and a few energetic goats . . . on a journey across sand , seas , and centuries .
