Domed city

Dubai has announced its intention to build the world's first climate - controlled city . All the facilities will be connected by a promenade of 4 . 3 miles , or 7km . The city will be covered with a dome that can be opened in the winter months and closed in the summer to keep the air conditioning circulating in the 48 million square feet . Though they have not released a start date for construction , the domed city already has a name : 'Mall of the world' . The chief executive officer of Dubai Holding , Ahmed Bin Byat , believes it will be costly and that they will need $680 million every year for the next ten years .

The project aims to build the biggest mall in the world as well as the biggest indoor theme park . Over 100 design , engineering , and architectural specialists are planning a grid of 33 roads , bus lanes , bike routes , plazas , and even gondolas on the Mall's artificial waterways . There will be thousands of hotels in the area and serviced apartment buildings .

They also plan to build a cultural celebration district which will house a large theater ? similar to Broadway in New York ? and an enormous three million square feet wellness center , which will even offer specialized surgical treatments , cosmetics surgery , and health care . They hope this will attract the medical tourism .

Even though Dubai is a popular spot , many tourists are by the extreme temperatures in the summer , often reaching 113 degrees Fahrenheit , or 45 degrees Celsius . The Mall of the World is an attempt to make Dubai a year - round destination and they are hoping to attract 180 million tourists annually when the construction is complete .

But does it sound too good to be true ? It's a controversial project and there are indeed some people who are not so enamored of the idea . Those concerned with the environment believe that trying to fight nature and cooling down the natural temperatures of the desert will only lead to more global warming as such constructions need huge amounts of energy and are responsible for carbon emissions .

Secondly , creating a domed city will make the gap between rich and poor even greater . 88 . 5% of workers in the United Arab Emirates are foreigners , and many of these are underpaid workers from South Asia . These migrant workers will help to build the domed city , but won't be able to afford to live in it . Some people will be desperate to get inside , meaning an authority will have to be established to decide who can enter . This will likely reinforce , , and poverty in the city . Keeping the city's have - nots out of the dome could turn ugly .
