Have you noticed brightly - coloured bicycles parked by the roads ? They are probably bicycles that can be rented at affordable using smartphones . This kind of bicycle rental , also known as bicycle sharing , was first introduced into Singapore during the " Walk Ride Cycle " campaign carried by the Land Transport Authority ( LTA ) . Why has LTA set out to promote walking , cycling and taking public transport the Singapore way of life ?

First , in our tiny island city - state , every pocket of land is and should not be wasted . Roads and car parks take up a lot of land , so we should control the number of vehicles in Singapore . Compared to private cars , public transport will make better of land with the capacity to transport large numbers of people .

Cycling , which is convenient for travelling short distances , the use of public transport as we can cycle to bus stops or MRT stations . Walking provides similar without even the need for any equipment . Both are also forms of physical activity , which are good for our health .

Another of " Walk Ride Cycle " is the positive impact on the environment . When more people swap their cars buses or bicycles , there will be fewer cars emitting gases harmful to the environment , so we are walking , riding and cycling to a greener and cleaner Singapore .

A lot of effort has been put in to public transport and to facilitate cycling with the building of bicycle racks and off - road paths for cyclists . creating spaces conducive for cycling , there is also a programme to educate people on safe riding .

The success of the campaign will on the support and cooperation of people . Take , for example , bicycle sharing in Singapore . There have been complaints about the haphazard parking of bicycles outside the designated . If only these cyclists would remember ? a small act of will go a long way to making Singapore a better place for all to live in .
