We often refer to koalas as 'koala bears' . This is actually incorrect . It stems from a common that koalas are a kind of bear . The reason is because of their adorable appearance ? they cuddly bears .

Perhaps the most distinctive trait that marsupials have is that they have an abdominal pouch . The sole purpose of the pouch is to allow the marsupials to their young . Some mammals have pouches that have a layer of strong muscle around its opening . The muscle can be expanded to ? loosen ? the pouch or contracted to ? tighten ? the pouch . The latter function helps to prevent the marsupials ? young from out when the mothers are on the move .

Have you ever wondered marsupials have to carry their young around while the young of other mammals can walk shortly they are born ? This is because the young of marsupials spend much less time in gestation compared to other mammals . Because of this , marsupials give to their young early . The moment they are born , the young climbs from the birth canal to the pouch where the teat is . The young nurses immediately , relying on its mother ? s milk for . In the meantime , the marsupials carry their helpless young to protect them from .

When the young become too large and heavy to into the pouch , they will climb onto the back of their mothers , clinging onto the fur . This is when the young start to learn survival such as finding food sources and avoiding predators by watching their mothers . It is amazing how the marsupials have developed such advanced adaptations for survival .
