Why is English spelling so sometimes ? One word can sound different in two situations , like " read " in the past and present ! That ? s because English is a mix of many languages : Germanic , Latin , and lots of French too . Over time , the sounds , but the spelling often stayed the same . . . This mix makes English but also confusing . That ? s why some words look tricky even when they sound simple .

English the Latin alphabet , but it didn ? t have all the sounds needed . To compensate , they used letter pairs like " th " and " sh . " Later , pronunciation , but spelling remained unchanged , so we have like " knight " with a silent " k " , for example . Spelling reveals the origins of words , even when it doesn ? t perfectly with pronunciation .
