About this activity

Introduction:

It's very hard to imagine the horrors of the Middle Passage. Many of those who suffered and died had their voices silenced by history. While we cannot truly know their full experience, we can try to understand some of their pain and despair by focusing on the small details that bring their story closer.

Instructions:

Read the journal entry below, written from the perspective of someone captured and forced onto a slave ship. Some words are missing. Use the Word Bank to fill in the blanks with the words you think best describe the terrible experience. Choose words that focus on what the person might smell, hear, and feel.

despair lost ocean breathe smell nightmares pushing darkness

The air down here is thick and heavy , a truly terrible . It burns my throat and makes my head spin . I can barely in this darkness . The sounds are worse ? the constant creak of the ship's timbers , the crashing of the above us , and the endless clinking of the metal chains that bind my ankles .

Many are sick around me . The smell of sickness and hangs everywhere . There is a deep , cold fear in my stomach , a feeling of being utterly and alone . I feel the ship rock and sway with every wave , us further and further away from my home , my family , and everything I ever knew . Sleep brings no peace , only of the raid . I wonder if the sun still shines brightly where my village once stood , or if has covered everything there too . The hope I once held feels like it is slowly , painfully , slipping away .
