jade city-states money jungle bartered

The Maya lived in many different . Each city - state had different resources , so they traded with each other to get what they needed . This made trade very important .

Merchants were the people who travelled between city - states to trade goods . They did not use . Instead , they ? they swapped one type of good for another . They often traded , cacao beans , salt , fish , feathers , animal skins , and tools .

To travel , merchants walked or sailed close to the shore so they wouldn ? t get lost . Sometimes they brought goods from the or the sea , and exchanged them for materials from other areas .

Trading helped Maya cities grow richer and stay connected .
