Last spring , I myself to a short city in Brugge , the picturesque town in the northwest of Belgium . Known for its canals , streets , and well - Gothic architecture , Brugge had long been on my travel wish list ? and it certainly up to expectations .
I arrived by train from Brussels on a Friday afternoon and was immediately by the town's charm . Unlike many modern cities , Brugge seems to have the pressures of time . The walk from the station to the city centre felt like into a fairy tale , with every turn revealing houses , tranquil waterways , and beautifully facades .
After checking into a cosy hotel just off the Markt square , I spent the rest of the day around the historic centre . The Belfry of Bruges , towering over the main square , offered breathtaking views of the town , although the 366 - step climb was not for the - hearted . That evening , I dined in a restaurant by the canal , where I sampled Flemish stew served with bread and a local Trappist beer ? a culinary combination I won ? t soon forget .

Saturday was to sightseeing and culture . I started at the Groeningemuseum , which an impressive collection of Flemish and Belgian art , works by Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch . Later , I joined a boat tour of the canals , which offered a completely different of the city . The guide ? s commentary brought Brugge ? s rich history to , highlighting stories from its days as a medieval trading .
One of the most parts of the trip was visiting the Begijnhof , a , whitewashed courtyard that once housed a community of religious women . It was incredibly peaceful ? a contrast to the city centre just a few minutes away . In the afternoon , I in a bit of Belgian chocolate tasting at one of the shops near the Church of Our Lady , where I also admired Michelangelo ? s famous Madonna and Child .
On my final day , I through the quieter parts of the city , enjoying a relaxed breakfast at a café with of the canal . The gentle rhythm of life in Brugge , the sound of horses' hooves on , and the of fresh waffles in the air made it difficult to say goodbye .
Brugge is a city that effortlessly history , romance , and . It ? s not just a place you visit ; it ? s a place you experience . I left feeling , relaxed , and already planning my next visit .
