De oude Egyptenaren geloofden dat de niet stopte als iemand stierf . Ze dachten dat er een was , waarin de ziel verder leefde .

Om in dit nieuwe leven te komen , moest het van de overledene goed bewaard blijven . Daarom ontwikkelden de Egyptenaren het . Dit was een proces waarbij het lichaam in verschillende stappen werd behandeld , zoals het verwijderen van de , het drogen met en het met linnen doeken .

Belangrijke voorwerpen werden meegegeven in het graf , zoals , zodat de overledene niets tekort zou komen in het hiernamaals .

De Egyptenaren geloofden ook dat de overledene een oordeel moest ondergaan . In het stonden spreuken en tekeningen om te helpen bij deze reis . Tijdens het werd het hart van de overledene gewogen tegenover de van de godin Maät . Als het hart lichter was , mocht de overledene het hiernamaals binnengaan bij de god .
