Will the world run out of chocolate by 2050 ?

Due to rising temperatures and environmental dangers , chocolate production is set to become endangered in the next 30 years .

As the information superhighway , the internet , becomes more and more accessible , the spread of seems to have become an epidemic lately . In the case of the news , which recently went viral about the world of chocolate by 2050 , the reporters the headline in order to it and get people to read the article . The world is not going to run out of chocolate in the next few years , but if the Earth's temperature continues to rise , the crops in Africa will likely be reduced by area and could become more susceptible to diseases and funguses . While this is definitely a for chocoholics worldwide , they can rest assured knowing that preventive measures are being taken to prevent catastrophic losses due to rising temperatures .

Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire are the leading producers of cacao currently , providing over 50% of the world's chocolate . However , cacao is also produced in Australia , South America , India , and the Caribbean ? so there is no need to panic just yet . Rising temperatures are not solely the reason for endangered crops . Lack of updating cultivation methods have also caused a decline in cacao production in West Africa . Farmers are considering moving their crops further north into the mountains , which is currently preserved for wildlife . But moving the crops and farms to the mountains could destroy ecosystems that are already under threat from illegal farming and .

So , why not increase cacao production in the other countries ? That is a possibility , but South American cacao crops , for example , have been with a fungus for decades . Scientists have been working on editing or modifying the plant DNA in order to make it more resistant to disease and fungus using a method called CRISPR . Jennifer Doudna , the UC Berkeley geneticist who invented CRISPR , originally created the gene editing technology to help eradicate human diseases , prompting the ethical debate about parents creating via genetic modification . She and her team of research scientists have teamed up with the American candy maker , Mars , to help cacao survive and thrive in higher temperatures and drier climates using her gene editing techniques . If her team's work is successful , this could also eliminate the need for West African farmers to relocate their cacao crops further north into the mountains . In addition , it could help cacao to be grown in other areas of the world where the conditions are not ideal for production .

Why are reporters trying to create panic in the hearts of chocolate lovers across the globe , causing people to buy t - shirts that say , " Save our planet ! It's the only one with chocolate ! " ? There could be a few reasons , they may have a genuine ecological concern for the future of cacao crops and the production of chocolate . However , it is possible that they are warning us that if the crops are diminished , the price of the world's favorite candy will increase ? the economic law of supply and demand . Regardless of their reasons , chocolate lovers do not need to start stockpiling chocolate as if a chocalypse ( chocolate apocalypse ) were . Our planet is safe for now , and we can still get our chocolate fix .
