Last weekend , Anna was trying to on a brave face at her cousin ? s birthday party . She had just lost her job , but she didn ? t spill the beans and make everyone worry . Her brother , however , couldn ? t the problem . " Speaking of the devil , " he said when Anna ? s boss walked in unexpectedly .

Anna thought the boss might cut to the chase and talk about why she was fired . Instead , he acted as if nothing had happened , which left Anna in the dark . She hated left in the dark because it made her feel powerless .

Later , her cousin cheer her up , reminding her that blood is thicker than water , and family would always support her . Still , Anna feared that if she mistakes at work , she might really screw up her career .

Her aunt whispered , " Remember , where there is smoke , there is fire . Maybe your company had problems before you even noticed . " Anna nodded , realizing that ignoring signs had not helped .

When the cake arrived , her best friend arrived late . Everyone laughed , saying , " Better late than never ! " Anna smiled , knowing that seeing her friend was all she needed better .

After the party , she reflected . Perhaps she needed to move on , because if she about the past , it would be like " out of sight , out of mind . " She promised herself never to snooze again when opportunities appeared . After all , " if you snooze , you lose . "
