Perkataan adalah gabungan dua vokal dalam satu yang menghasilkan bunyi vokal baru . Dalam bahasa Indonesia , contoh umum seperti ai , au , ei , oi , ui sering muncul dalam kata - kata sehari - hari . Misalnya kata mengandung ai , dan kata mengandung au . Perbedaan utama antara vokal gabungan dengan vokal tunggal terletak pada cara melafalkannya ; bunyi yang dihasilkan membentuk satu gelombang lidah yang mengubah makna kata . Pelajar perlu memperhatikan pola penulisan agar pemenggalan kata tetap jelas dalam puisi maupun nyanyian .
