Dividing fractions uses a standard rule that turns division into multiplication . To divide a by b , multiply by the of b . Swapping the and the yields the same operation in disguise . After that , the product to its lowest terms . If the divisor is a mixed number , first convert it to a fraction , then apply the same rule . You can make the calculation easier by canceling common factors early , or by rewriting complex fractions as a single fraction . The final result is a single simplified fraction in most cases .
