Los nodos de la red no están conectados directamente a un único enlace, sin conexión entre ellos.

La topologia de anillo está estructurada con un único anillo cerrado formado por nodos y enlaces

En la topologia de estrella la transferencia de información no pasa por el nodo central, generalmente ocupado con un hub.

En la topologia de árbol no tiene en cambio un nodo de enlace troncal, usualmente ocupado por un hub o concentrador o un switch

En la topologia de malla completa lo negativo es que si algún enlace deja de funcionar, la información no circula.

En la topologia de red celular ocupa un área geográfica dividida en regiones o celdas y el medio de comunicación es inalámbrico, también llamado “no guiado” o “no físico”.
