Spanish , which comes from Latin , began to increase in importance after the fall of the Roman Empire . While many regional dialects started to or even to disappear , Spanish continued to spread across the Iberian Peninsula . Some local languages were gradually and finally died because they were not taught or written down . Others , like Basque or Catalan , managed to be preserved despite external pressure . During the Middle Ages , Spanish was strongly influenced by Arabic , and thousands of words introduced . Over time , some of them were lost , but many were preserved and the vocabulary . When Spain expanded overseas in the 15th and 16th centuries , Spanish began to increase as it was spread to the Americas , Africa , and Asia . In these regions , local languages started to be decreased in use as Spanish was made . In modern times , Spanish has managed not only to survive but also to be in areas where it had once declined . For example , in the United States , the number of Spanish speakers continues to increase , and the language is preserved as part of cultural identity . Although some local varieties may still decrease in use , the overall trend shows that Spanish has been well preserved and continues to thrive as one of the most languages in the world .
