In the , or - es for he , she , or it . For verbs ending in , and , as in study - > studies . If a verb ends with - o , - ch , - s , - sh , or - x , add - es , for example go - > , watch - > watches . Most other verbs simply add - s , as in walk - > walks . We use do / does for questions and negatives . Remember spelling rules help us form correct sentences in everyday routines .

To form the third person singular , most verbs add - s . If the verb ends with - s , - x , - z , or with - ch or - sh , we add - es ( he , she , it , he ) . If the base ends with a consonant + y , the y becomes - ies ( ) . If the base ends with a vowel + y , simply add - s ( ) . In questions and negatives , the main verb remains in base form ( Do they ? They do not walk ) .

Some verbs have irregular - looking spellings in the simple present for he / she / it . For example , the verb be is irregular in the present tense , and forms like appear in phrases such as he has a plan . Regular verbs with - y after a vowel simply take - s , not - ies ( ? ) . Remember that pronunciation often guides spelling : adding - s sounds like / s / or / z / depending on the final sound .
