Los dispositivos mas comunes que integran una red son el router, switch, hub, modem, computadora e impresoras en red.

El router conecta varios dispositivos dentro de una red local.

El switch permite que los dispositivos se conecten a la red de forma inalámbrica.

El router es un dispositivo de red que se encarga de enviar datos entre diferentes redes. Generalmente, conecta la red local con Internet.

La función principal del hub es recibir datos de un dispositivo y reenviarlos a todos los demás dispositivos conectados, sin importar quién sea el destinatario real.

El switch es "inteligente" ya que aprende qué dispositivos están conectados en qué puertos y optimiza el tráfico para que no haya colisiones ni pérdida de datos.

Un switch genera colisiones de red, un hub las evita.

Aunque fue muy usado en los años 90, el hub ha sido reemplazado casi completamente por el switch, debido a su baja eficiencia y falta de seguridad.
