المد الفرعي يختلف عن المد العارض للسكون لأنه لا يعتمد على السكون أصلاً.

المد الفرعي يقتصر على كلمتين في النص القرآني فقط وليس في أي مكان آخر.

المد الفرعي يُعَدُّ من أنواع المد في التجويد ويعتمد على وجود سكون بعد حرف المد.

المد الفرعي يدخل ضمن أحكام المَدّ التي تَصِلُ إلى أربع حركات أُقصى في بعض القراءات.

يمكن تطبيق المد الفرعي في القرآن الكريم عندما يوجد سكون مناسب بعد حرف المد.

في المد الفرعي، يبدأ التمديد عندما يأتي حرف المد مع سكونٍ تابع.
