Finally, the magma reaches the surface and erupts through the main hole, or vent, of the volcano. This magma gathers in a big underground space called a magma chamber. Deep under the Earth’s surface, some rocks melt because of very high heat and pressure. The melted rock is called magma When the pressure gets too strong, the magma starts to move upward through cracks in the Earth’s crust. As time goes by, the pressure inside the chamber becomes stronger because the hot gases inside the magma keep expanding. On its way up, the magma carries hot gases, ashes, and small pieces of rock. When the eruption happens, lava, ash, and gases come out forcefully into the air.

How Volcanoes Erupt

After the eruption, the pressure goes down, and the volcano becomes calm again until new magma and gas build up.

Finally, the magma reaches the surface and erupts through the main hole, or vent, of the volcano.

This magma gathers in a big underground space called a magma chamber.
