After his family was in 750 , Prince Abd al - Rahman began a long and dangerous journey to the Abbasids . He fled across the Euphrates River with his Bedr while being chased by soldiers . His Yahya turned back and was killed , but Abd al - Rahman and Bedr traveled through Palestine , the Sinai Peninsula , and Egypt , often and moving secretly to avoid capture . Eventually , Abd al - Rahman made it to north Africa , then to Al - Andalus , where he found and became the first Emir of Córdoba . His lasted several years .
