The of the Umayyad family happened in 750 when the Abbasid revolution defeated the ruling Umayyads . The new , Abu al - Abbas as - Saffah , invited the remaining Umayyads to a , promising peace and pardon . Instead , attacked and killed most of the family members during the event . The were quickly removed so the feast could continue . Only one Umayyad , Abd al - Rahman , managed to and later founded a new Umayyad in Spain . This massacre ended Umayyad rule and began the Abbasid in the Islamic world .
