في العربية، اللام تقرأ دائماً منفصلة قبل الحرف الأول من الكلمة.

الحروف الشمسية هي جميع الحروف ما عدا ا، ب، ج.

عند وجود اللام قبل حرف شمسي تُلفظ اللام كما في الكلمات القمرية.

حروف القمر هي: ا، ب، ج، ح، خ، ع، غ، ف، ق، ك، م، هـ، و، ي.

في الكلمات التي تبدأ بحرف قمرّي، تُدغَم اللام دائماً.

الكلمة 'الولد' تُقرأ كما لو كان الحرف الأول بعد 'ال' هو و وهو حرف قمرّي؛ اللام لا تُدغم.

عند وجود اللام قبل حرف شمسي، تُسقط اللام وتُلفظ الكلمة بالحرف الشمسي مباشرة.
