In Chapters 30 and 31 , Ally learns a lot ! First , Mr . teaches her how to play . He explains that the goal of chess is to capture the opponent's by trapping it , but not actually take it off the board ? you just make it until it has nowhere to go . Ally quickly discovers she is good at chess , which surprises her .
Later , Mr . Daniels tells Ally the results of her tests : she has dyslexia , but she is very smart ! He says he is getting a special education degree to help students like her . He asks Ally to stay after school for extra help , joking that it will be for her . Ally agrees because she realizes he is truly helping her . Mr . Daniels teaches her about " learning differences , " explaining there are for brains to learn . They start practicing writing letters in , which makes Ally feel hopeful about finally learning to .
