Because of this , we are connected to millions of people all the world . This idea is called " six degrees of separation . " A writer named Frigyes Karinthy first wrote about this theory in 1929 . His says that we can connect to anyone on the planet through a short chain of people . You just need to follow a chain from your friend , to their friend , and so on . It only takes about six " " to reach any person . When this idea was new , it was just a theory . Today , however , social like Facebook makes this theory seem correct . A 2011 study showed most Facebook users were connected by less than five people . As more people use the internet , the world more connected . This means you are probably much closer to your favourite or film star than you think .
