For centuries , the Iberian Peninsula was divided among Christians , Muslims , and . The ( " reconquest " ) was a long effort by Christian kingdoms to reclaim lands taken by Muslim rulers , or , who had conquered in 711 CE . Over time , Christian forces pushed south , capturing in 1085 and finally Granada in 1492 , when Queen I and King Ferdinand II united Spain under Christianity .
The Reconquista ended centuries of cultural diversity but gave Spain the strength to fund ? s 1492 voyage , launching European exploration . Soon after , Ferdinand and Isabella created the Spanish Inquisition ( 1478 ) to enforce Catholic unity . It targeted converted Jews ( conversos ) and Muslims ( moriscos ) suspected of secretly practicing their old faiths .
Led by Tomás de Torquemada , the used torture and executions to root out heresy . The Edict of forced Jews and later Muslims to leave Spain . Though it strengthened royal power , it hurt Spain ? s economy , culture , and intellectual life .
Together , the Reconquista and Inquisition unified Spain and spread influence worldwide ? but also revealed the lasting dangers of religious intolerance .
