Cultural differences in the workplace

How do you feel about your own culture ? Most people would admit that they like and appreciate many things about their culture . It is normal and natural to feel more comfortable with those who share our own culture . With however , it is becoming more and more common to have coworkers from cultures from around the world . Sometimes , this can present unique and challenging issues in the workplace . Interestingly , Mahatma Gandhi said , " No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive . " So , having different cultures around us is a good thing as it expands our knowledge and understanding of different people and helps us to think in different ways .

One of the major challenges that can present a problem is a language barrier . Perhaps your coworker is skilled at their job and was recruited precisely for that reason , but they haven't learned to speak the local language yet . What can you do to overcome this potential barrier ?

Learn a few key phrases . For a moment , put yourself in your coworker's shoes . Imagine that you have accepted a job in a foreign country and you do not speak the language yet . Now imagine that one of your new coworkers has learned a couple of phrases or expressions in your language . How would that make you feel ? Certainly , it would strengthen your relationship with that person and form that will help increase your productivity as a team . Of course , depending on the circumstances , specific language training would also likely be necessary for the benefit of the new employee and the existing team .

You could also learn about your coworker's culture . Perhaps you could research what kind of food is typical where they are from , or if there are any particular customs or that would be good to be aware of . This will definitely help them to feel more comfortable . Be about celebrating the differences in culture you find in your team , perhaps by having culturally themed lunches or social events . This will help everyone to build appreciation for the diversity of your team . You can also be open to try new things . If you are the new employee and you have moved to a new country , be about trying the local cuisine . Accept invitations and hospitality where appropriate to do so . This way you will avoid creating boundaries and build bridges instead .

Try and be as accommodating as possible . Some of your coworkers may have cultural requirements that they are expected to follow and maintain , such as prayer times and / or religious holidays . Do your best to work their needs into your work schedule so that you can be supportive instead of divisive .

Keeping an open mind will help you to maintain and promote positive relationships within your team , regardless of a person's culture . Remember that your way is not the only way , or even the best way . If you are able to find common ground where everyone can understand and appreciate each other , you will create an atmosphere of respect and your entire team will be able to its cultural differences .
